Neurologic Voice Assessment

A voice assessment may be ordered by your internist, neurologist, or otolaryngologist if a neurologic cause of your voice disorder is suspected. Included in the exam is a detailed case history of the problem (length of time since onset of symptoms, results of other tests and evaluations, medications that have been prescribed to treat), followed by a laryngeal videostroboscopic examination to assess your vocal folds and upper airway. Your BBIVAR clinician uses a rigid endoscope in your mouth or a small flexible fiberoptic scope passed through your nose to visualize the vocal folds. This is video-recorded for the voice pathologist, physician, and you to review.  Common neurologic etiologies involving hoarseness or voice changes include Spasmodic Dysphonia, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and laryngeal tremor.
