Voice Pathologist & Swallowing Specialist

 

Marissa Nguyen M.A., CCC-SLP, is a swallowing specialist and voice pathologist at the Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation (BBIVAR). She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication disorders with a minor in psychology from the University of Alabama. She received her Master of Arts degree in speech-language pathology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Marissa completed her clinical fellowship at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, TX. During her fellowship, Marissa specialized in dysphagia and voice rehabilitation in the head and neck cancer population in addition to surgical airway management, gender affirming voice care, and treating patients with polytraumatic injuries.


Marissa’s clinical interests include dysphagia in the head and neck cancer population, voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy, and gender-affirming voice care. Her current research interests include coordination of breathing and swallowing as it relates to pulmonary disease. Marissa has been involved in clinical dysphagia research related to the use of high flow nasal cannula and completed a study examining fluid flow perceptions while drinking from an Advanced Flow Control cup in a young adult population to aid future research in the use of specialized drinking vessels for patients with dysphagia. Recently, Marissa co-published an ASHA SIG 13 Perspectives paper titled “A Design-Driven Approach to Develop Innovative Clinical Experiences in Dysphagia”.
